Alex Govier - Pianist & Accordionist Falmouth - Cornwall - His Musical Education

fter my mother bought a piano to start to learn to play my parents observed I could pick out all the tunes from the Sunday School and chapel on it. It was decided I should go to piano lessons with the local organist of St. George's Methodist Church, Truro, Cornwall, Mr. Albert H. Roberts which I agreed to light-heartedly, it seemed a harmless enough joke at the time. I never found learning music difficult. My mother unfortunately never learned to play though!

I moved on to learn the organ at the age of 13 and picked up the accordion more-or-less accidentally when a temporary lodger brought in a 12-bass accordion which he had no idea how to play. I however sussed it out immediately, bought a course on 120 bass accordion and went through it in a week.

For a time I worked as a local newspaper reporter in Truro, but after taking organ exams with Trinity College of Music decided to try to get to the college to learn. I took the Graduate course, but also squeezed in practical playing diplomas, culminating in a Fellowship of the college in Organ Playing (FTCL). I then went on to London University for the next year retaining my organ lessons with Harry Gabb, Sub-Organist of St. Pauls Cathedral and Organist to her Majesty the Queen at St. James's Palace.

I had the opportunity of playing the instruments at both those places, at St. Pauls sometimes playing the outgoing music on the 5-manual 8 section organ while my tutor went on to his next appointment for he was a very busy man.

I also had Mr. Leslie Chase as my piano tutor and editor of Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians and the great foremost Mozart expert the late Dr. Stanley Sadie as my theory teacher.

The rest of my education was more practical as you can see on the career page.
